Any movies you like that are kind of in the 'Get Smart' spirit? I was nicely surprised with "OSS-117: Cairo, Nest of Spies" - it didn't quite have me on the floor laughing, but I got a kick out of the boorish, 'sticks out like a sore thumb' secret agent and the movie's uncanny 1959 look. I was also surprised to find the OSS-117 character actually predates James Bond, both in novels and movies! I'd seen a 1960s title and figured it to be one more 007 ripoff.

maybe it would be a good idea to define what people think is "in the spirit of Get Smart"... does it just mean any funny spy movie? or does there have to be something more to it... a little political satire, for instance? or a lead character who is accident-prone? or what?

Well, I figured that description was plenty vague enough to cover a lot of ground - besides your spot-on categories, I'd add a cool 1960s feel as a qualifier. One of my all-time favorites that fits here is 'The President's Analyst' from 1967 which is a comedy/satire, but for me the laughter is mostly nervous. Lots of thought-provoking dialogue including this early scene: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjoW8cfts5c

I've caught a bit of OSS 117 when it came on the World Movies channel recently (the new one) and it looked allright - i may rent it at some point.

But I reiterate - if you want a get Smart like film - albeit english, see Johhny English. thinking back its more Get Smart than James Bond

As a longtime Mr. Bean fan I should check out 'Johnny English' - even if Rowan's comedy relief in 'Never Say Never Again' bugged me. Some of these movies work for me, some don't - Bill Murray's "The Man Who Knew too Little" was a drag. But the original 'Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe' has been one of my favorites for a long time! The sequel, and Tom Hanks' remake, much less so.
