I didn't rush right out and buy the DVD, because I didn't really know anything about this 'movie'. It was on TBS earlier this evening, though, so I thought I might give it a chance.
I don't think I watched more than the first 15 minutes before I turned it off. I just found it to be incredibly juvenile and not at all like anything from the original series, or even in the same spirit.
I still haven't seen the Steve Carell movie, but after seeing what I did of this, I don't know if I want to bother.
The original Get Smart was built largely on silly sight gags and catchphrases, but it was MILES better than this Bruce & Lloyd thing, whatever it is!

Most movies do not make it to TV so fast. Maybe because it was Direct-to-DVD, that sped it up? I wouldn't be surprised to learn they planned it this way to help get people who liked the theatrical film excited about the upcoming DVD release.

i imagine Shtarker was probably right about why Bruce & Lloyd were on TV when they were... i agree, too, that it's very different from the classic TV show... you might take a quantum of solace, though, in the knowledge that the Bruce & Lloyd DVD movie was also very different from the '08 theatrical movie... i'm not sure what their target audience was for that DVD, unless they were specifically going after the Nerdy Teenage Boy demographic... it's a shame, because the basic concept almost seemed passable, if not for the obvious problem of "How do you make a Get Smart-related movie without Max and the Chief?" the '08 movie was MUCH better, IMO... part of its strength was that it was built for a more general demographic... it has plenty of homages to the original, but it is still very different from the original in certain aspects (more/bigger action sequences, not as much political commentary, caters to Carell's comedy style), but my best advice is to give it a chance and just see for yourself what you think of it... you never know what you might like!
