This is for discussion on the actor who marvellously played the Chief - Ed Platt. Fellow cinematic enthusiasts may remember him from Rebel Without A Cause as the policeman Ray, and in North By Northwest as Roger Thornhill's lawyer - 2 performances which had my parents yelling "hey thats chief!" What do you think of these and other performances of Ed Platt outside Get Smart until he tragically committed suicide in 1974. see the Ed Platt tribut site edplatt.20m.com/ <-there

Ed Platt was awesome... so terrible that he took his own life! it seems to me i saw Ed in one of Don Knotts' movies one time, but i can't remember which one off hand, and i didn't see it listed on Ed's IMDB page... any time i see him in anything besides Get Smart, though, i always yell at the screen like your parents did! btw, amusing tidbit: Ed Platt's character in North By Northwest was named Victor Larrabee...

anyhow finding out he was in Cape Fear makes me want to see it again - I must have missed him the first time....

Ed Platt was the star of 'The Rebel Set' where he was the ringleader of a gang of beatniks who pull a heist. Yes, beatniks. He was hardcore enough here to kill off his gang when necessary.
The essential coolness of Platt aside, the quality of this movie made it a natural for 'Mystery Science Theater 3000', where I saw it.

its been ages since I looked at this...seems odd for Platt to play a beatnik - though he has the authoratative air to be a ringleader for sure.
Looking at IMDB - his character was named Mr. T!
and i did watch Cape Fear again - he makes a great judge.
he also played a character called 'Captain Hitchcock" in "A Ticklish affair", another one of thos little parallels you find in the film/tv industry.
what a legend.

Back to the legend who was Ed Platt - I saw him recently as the doctor who diagnoses Lauren Bacall's miscarriage in WRITTEN ON THE WIND... another small but marvellous role that always makes me wonder how Platt didnt get more great roles pre and post Get Smart, until his death of course.

He was indeed - he's Cary's lawyer at the drink-driving hearing.
